From the season 2026/27 Ryan Stoll will be a permanent ensemble member at the State Theatre, where he will sing, among others such roles as KING HENRY in “Lohengrin” and FRÈRE LAURENT in “Romeo and Juliet”.
The young artist is an American bass-baritone/bass known for his charismatic and energetic performances on the operatic stage. He sings a diverse and sometimes eclectic repertoire, ranging from obscure Russian masterpieces (Prince Gudal in Rubinstein's "The Demon") to roles in world premieres and opera workshops (Charlie in "The Crash," Bindy McCall in "Roscoe," etc.).
The singer, who lives in Germany has been delighting audiences here since 2022, at first with his debut as SIR COLONEL FRANCIS CHESNEY in "Charley's Aunt", later as MAESTRO SPINELOCCIO in "Gianni Schicchi" and as CHARLY in the world premiere of Russell Hepplewhite's "The Crash". For this very interpretation he was praised as a "bass with enormous volume".
Die Deutsche Bühne and TheaterPur.net wrote: "... He really shows what he can do". So far, he has only been seen in Germany at the Oldenburg State Theatre, where he appeared last season as THE EAGLE and THE VOICE OF ZEUS in Walter Braunfels' "Die Vögel" and as ARIODATE in Handel's "Xerxes".
Highlights of his career include: the JAILER in “The Trial at Rouen” with the Odyssey Opera and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (2021 Grammy nomination for Best Opera Recording); COLLINE in the Boston Opera Collaborative’s innovative production of “La Bohème” at the Turtle Swamp Brewery; and GUY COTTER in Joby Talbott’s epic, larger-than-life “Everest,” performed with the Chicago Opera Theater at the Harris Theater in Chicago.
Apart from various other new works and operatic classics Ryan Stoll also sung here MASETTO in “Don Giovanni”, HAJNY in “Rusalka”, DOTTORE GRENVIL and BARONE DUPHOL in “La Traviata”, as well as COMMISSARIO and ZIO BONZO in “Madama Butterfly”.
Ryan participated in numerous of America's best opera training programs, including the Chautauqua Opera, the Des Moines Metro Opera, the Central City Opera, the Chicago Opera Theater, and the Sarasota Opera.
In 2024 he was a semi-finalist at the International Otto Edelmann Competition in Vienna.
