  BIOGRAPHY  

 

Recently, Karine Babajanyan succeeded at the Leipzig Opera as TOSCA and CIO-CIO-SAN in “Madama Butterfly” and as ELENA in “Mefistofele” at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari. At the Puccini-Festival Torre del Lago she could be seen in MADAMA BUTTERFLY, TOSCA and TURANDOT, t the Scala di Milano in Strawinsky’s „Le Noces“ and at the Opéra de Toulon as LISA in “Pique Dame”.

The soprano, who was known until now for her interpretations of the Italian repertoire, made her spectacular debut as SIEGLINDE in “Walküre” i at the Budapest Wagner Days in 2022. She was re-engaged for this very role in 2024 ans also portrayed SIEGLINDE with the Györ Philharmonic Orchestra.

In 2019 she made her debut as TOSCA at the Vienna State Opera and in 2020 at the German Opera Berlin. At the Opera House Leipzig she also succeeded as MINNIE in “Fanciulla del West” and as TOSCA.

After her debut as CIO-CIO-SAN at the Opera House Graz the press wrote:
„Karine Babajanyan succeeds not only in wisely acting but also in giving a musically complex portrayal of the title heroin.....”

Since then, the artist has been very successful in this very role e.g. at the New National Theatre Tokyo, at the Hamburg State Opera, the Flemish Opera Antwerp, the Opera House Frankfurt, the Sta te Theatres of Saarbrücken and Wiesbaden and the Stuttgart State Opera.

Karine studied singing and choir direction at the Erivan City Conservatory, graduating with distinction. After participating in master classes in Italy the young artist returned to her native country. Here, she got her first engagement at the Armenian National Opera.

In 1999 Karine Babajanyan put down her roots in Germany and after first engagements in Koblenz, Bielefeld and Hanover she became a member of the Stuttgart State Opera. Here, the versatile artist was hailed by both the press and the public for her “… warmly-timbred, youthful dramatic voice…” in all the important roles of her repertoire e.g. the CONTESSA in ‘Le nozze di Figaro’, FIORDILIGI in ‘Cosi fan tutte’, MIMI in ‘La Boheme’, LEONORA in ‘Il Trovatore’, just to name a few.

Karine Babajanyan works with such famous stage directors and conductors as Willy Decker, Jossi Wieler, Peter Konwitschny, Hans Neuenfels, Philipp Himmelmann, Adám Fischer,Helmut Rilling, Lothar Zagrosek, Nicola Luisotti, Stefan Soltesz, Jonathan Nott and many others.

In 2007 the attractive soprano made her widely noticed debut as TOSCA at the Bregenz Festival, the location to the James Bond film ‚A Quantum Of Solace’.

Further engagements brought her to the Staatsoper Berlin State Opera, the Finnish National Opera Helsinki, the Royal Opera Copenhagen, the Semperoper Dresden, the Aalto Theatre Essen, the Zürich Opera House, to the Rheinoper Düsseldorf/Duisburg , the Israeli Opera Tel Aviv, to Beijing, to the Teatro de Bellas Artes in Mexico, to the Warsaw National Opera with such roles as SUOR ANGELICA, RACHEL in “La Juive”, ARIADNE, JENUFA, TATIANA, AMELIA, ELISABETTA, MADDALENA (Andre Chenier).

She made her debut at the Bavarian State Opera Munich as ELENA in “Mefistofele”.
