Recently, Matthias Frey had guest performances as SCARAMUCCIO in “Ariadne auf Naxos” at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, at the Teatro Verdi Trieste and at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. At the Teatro Regio di Parma he was JACK O'BRIEN in “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagony”. He also sang his first TRIQUET in “Eugen Onegin” at the Giessen Theatre.
In the 2022/23 season, he could be seen at the Aalto Theatre Essen as the 1st ARMOURED in “Die Zauberflöte”, as RUSTIGHELLO in “Lucrezia Borgia”, as CARAMELLO in “Eine Nacht in Venedig” and as WALTHER VON DER VOGELWEIDE in “Tannhäuser”. In summer 2023, he made his role debut as SYMON in “Der Bettelstudent” on the Seebühne Kriebstein.
He made his successful debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2018 and 2019 under the direction of Franz Welser-Möst as ZWEITER JUDE in Salome by Romeo Castelluci.
The Munich-born tenor has sung numerous lyric tenor roles, including CONTE ALMAVIVA in Rossini's “Il barbiere di Siviglia”, FENTON in Nicolai's “ Die Lustige Weiber von Windsor”and NEMORINO in Donizetti's “L'elisir d'amore” Mathias Frey has distinguished himself in major Mozart roles such as BELMONTE in “Die Entführung aus dem Serail”, FERRANDO in “Così fan tutte” and as TAMINO. He could repeatedly be heard with works by composers of the 20th century, including Berg, Korngold, Menotti, Stravinsky, Orff and Glass.
After a three-year permanent engagement at the Hof Theatre, Mathias Frey appeared at the Klagenfurt City Theatre in the 2016/17 season as CASSIO in Verdi's “Otello” and as NARRABOTH in Strauss' “Salome” in a production by Michael Sturminger and as TAMINO.
In the following seasons, he was part of the ensemble of the Linz New Music Theatre, where he appeared as TEBALDO in Bellini's “I Capuleti e i Montecchi” and as JAQUINO in Beethoven's “Fidelio” after successfully filling in as NARRABOTH.
Mr Frey initially studied architecture and only later singing at the Vienna Conservatory. He also received singing lessons from Rainer Trost, Renata Scotto at the Opera Studio di Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and masterclasses with Angelika Kirchschlager, Roman Trekel and Michael Schade. Since 2010 he has been working with Wolfgang Müller-Lorenz.
Guest engagements have taken Mathias Frey to the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar in Venezuela, the Ensemble Orchestra Kanazawa in Japan and to the Theater an der Wien, the Theater Nordhausen, the Theatre Augsburg, the Sächsische Landesbühnen, the Steyr Music Festival and the Chiemgau Festival, just to name a few.
In 2025 Matthias makes his debut as the 2nd JEW in “Salome” at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
