'The powerfull, beautiful baritone voice of Johannes Becks'

Since the season 2012/13 Johannes Beck is a member of the ensemble of the Opera House Gera, where he sang Captain BALSTRODE in ‘Peter Grimes’, BORIS ISMAILOV in ‘Lady Macbeth of Mzensk’, OLD FELLOW in ‘Jenufa’ and ESCAMILLO and PETER BESENBINDER. During this time he hed guest performances in CARMINA BURANA at the Opera House Leipzig and in Vienna, here also as DON PIZARRO and at the Festival auf Mallorca as GIORGIO GERMONT in ‘La Traviata’. Besides, he made his debut as the HERALD in ‘Lohengrin’.
Already at the age of 16 the young Austrian first performed as a soloist in Haydn’s “Creation” in Eisenstadt. After finishing highschool , he continued his studies the at the College in Graz. At the opera school here, he had his first operatic experience (as Leporello and Papageno) and made his debut at the Opera House Graz.
Johannes Beck twice won the National Youth Music Competition. He completed his studies in Graz, earning his diploma with distinction and continued his education in the USA. First, he was a student of Dr. Joyce Farwell at the der Baylor University in Waco, Texas, where he performed as John Proctor in Ward’ s “Crucible”. Afterwards, he studied at the renowned Juilliard School in New York with Cynthia Hoffmann. 1994 he returned to Europe and became a member of the Zurich Opera House Studio, where he made his debut in “Salome”. At the same time he won the Eistedfod Competition in Llangollen, Wales.
From 1995 to 1997 he was engaged at the Opera Studio of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. Here, he sang such roles as the COUNT in Mozart’s “Figaro’s Wedding” and MALATESTA in Donizetti’s “Don Pasquale”. At the State Opera he participated in the world premiere of Henze’s “Venus and Adonis”. Guest engagements took him to Bamberg (Huldbrand in Hoffmann’s “Undine”, released on CD in 1995), Merzig (Figaro-Count) and the Vienna Chamber Opera (“Viva la Mamma”). At Westminster Cathedral in London he sang the solo baritone part in in Britten’s “War-Requiem”.
Until 2007 he had a permanent engagement at the State Theatre am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. Here, he portrayed more than 30 roles, among which TSAR PETER, the COUNT in “The Poacher”, PAPAGENO, NARDO in “The Pretend Garden Girl”, MARCELLO and SCHAUNARD in “La Bohéme”, DANDINI in “La Cenerentola” und OLIVIER in “Capriccio”. He could also be seen in several operetta productions such as “The Beggar Student” (JAN), “Paris Life” (JAN FRICK) and “The Bat” (Dr. FALKE).
As Circus Director OBOLSKI he had guest performances at the Musical Comedy in Leipzig. He sang at the Mörbisch Festival and was Olivier in R. Strauss’ “Capriccio” at the Edinburgh Festival. With the Munich Symphonics he performed a series of Verdi evenings.
At the Cologne Opera House he sang a.o. TADDEO in „The Italian Girl in Algiers”, the FATHER in „Hänsel and Gretel” and DR.FALKE in „The Bat“.
In the season 2015/16 Johannes Beck debutes in the title part of Verdi’s ‘Rigoletto’ at the Opera House Gera.
