Mainfrankentheater Würzburg – La Traviata - ALFREDO |
At least in matters of poularity her partner Juraj Hollý can keep up. The tenor from Mannheim, who studied in Bratislava, won the 2010 Vienna Hans-Gabor-Belvedere-Singing Contest and made his debut at the Vienna Chamber Opera, presents himself as a nuancedly singing Alfredo. He doesn’t aspire to power and huge tones, but to delicately timbred nuances. Also in the Stretta of his sensitively shaped „De‘ miei bollenti spiriti“ he doesn’t need to push. The duet in the final act, in which he expresses once more his slope to escapism, Holly sings in a melancholic lyrical tone in the costume of a Bajazzo. |

Tenor Juraj Hollý portrays Violetta‘ s lover with youthful warmth and sensitive phrasing. His voice reflects both his emotional helplessness and his true love…
Alfredo’s appearance in the last act is truly impressing: Out of a bunch of uproarious clowns he appears – in the costume of the bajazzo , which at first seems rather odd – at Violetta’s deathbed. The direction pointedly bets on contrast and irritation: carnival, a symbol of displacement and social masquerade, intrudes in the opera’s most intimate moment. Alfredo turns into a tragical figure, stumbling between role and reality – a bajazzo, showing cheerfulness on the outside, but suffering on the inside. |

Outstanding singer Juraj Holly
Also in the national theatre’s revival of the play this prince plays a key role. In this performance Juraj Holly absolutely stands out. It is a pleasure to watch him working his way up to queerly beautiful exuberance and showing some true tenoral verve in the face of his princess. |

Vocally, Juraj Hollý was in no way a faint Ottavio. His elegant legato in „Il mio tesoro intanto” together with his perfect lyrical vocal colour were really captivating. |

And finally Juraj Hollý as Freddy, whose in love with Eliza. From his costume, one could get the impression, he walked right out of a Tim Burton movie. Vocally, the excellent opera tenor sounds like the young Karel Gott - a really great performance. |
